Die Kunst der Werbung

24 students of KIT and HfG Karlsruhe spend a weekend in a monastery talking about the Art of Advertising. For the documentation at the annual exhibition of HfG, there had to be a quick solution, since the exhibition opened two days after our return. So while beeing at the monastery, we handed out paper pre-printed in yellow and asked the participants to formulate short statements, derived from the discussions of those three days. For the exhibition the collected sheets where pinned to a wall holding 180 sheets. Next to the wall was a desk with some literature, relevant to the seminar and a computer with the discussed advertising-material.

Talks on Poetic Machines and Conviction in Design

The first two Videos of the talks held at Designblast 2011 are online. You can now watch Sebastian Noels and Harrissons talk in full length on vimeo.

Sebastian Noel is part of Troika, a London based design-studio. In his talk he presents some poetic machines and computer-driven installations that Troika created for London Airport, Victoria & Albert Museum and the Expo 2010 in Sanghai.

Harrison in his talk explains why you can’t set Marx’s Kapital with proprietary designsoftware and talks about his studio Open Source Publishing. OSP act from conviction when they only use royalty-free software for their work. Harrisson is living proof, that you don’t need Adobe to do good design with a computer and shows that there ist a lot of potential when designers reclaim their tools.

A lot of thanks go to Jürgen Foerst, for the live footage and his patience while he was blocked from his computer for three days of rendering.

The Art School Observation Club

Some time ago Urs Lehni iniciated the art school observation club. This is our humble aim:

“We are a group of students from the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG Karlsruhe) who try to analyze the current state of arts and design education in Europe and all around the world. We designed a questionnaire to collect data about art schools and research design education in general.

We want to provide a catalog of design schools to show the directions, aims and philosophies and present them with publications and later on with the survey results. The final step will be to process all the data, finish the website and create an overview and reference book, that provides information about all the design institutions.”

Today we finally sent out our questionaire to some design departments in Germany.

Soon we will have a print run of the english edition. At the moment we are looking for students organizing the distribution of the questoinare at their art schools. So if you are interested in this survey, drop by at http://www.art-school-observation-club.com/ to get in touch.
